“Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own." (Joshua 1:11)
A few months back my wife and I were on our way to Isle of Palms when we asked the Lord to speak to us about our next steps as a couple. "What do you have in store for us God?" "What do you want us to do?" These were some of the questions we found ourselves asking God. I heard Him say that the dream I have put inside of you to start a church is about to happen. Needless to say I was full of mixed emotions as we continued on our journey to the beach. I was excited, nervous, and found myself immediately doubting that I heard God.
This is where if you follow with me it gets crazy but I believe God will speak to you through our story. I don't normally like numbers but when I can't help but notice them I know God is trying to get my attention. Normally it is a verse reference I get or a random road sign, and you can call me crazy but I say I'm full of faith and grateful that our God still speaks to us today. We arrived to the beach and I couldn't help but notice 11 pelicans and 1 seagull. I did what any husband would do and I told my wife, "Danielle I feel like God is speaking to me can I borrow your phone to use the Bible App?" I went to Psalms 11:1 and it said, "For the director of music. Of David. In the LORD I take refuge. How then can you say to me: "Flee like a bird to your mountain." I said ok God I'm listening with no fear and all faith please speak. He lead me to Joshua 1:11 and said TAKE THE LAND.
I began to tell Danielle about the dream and how God had been speaking to me during the last few minutes. She looked back at me and said "Okay, if that's what God said then lets do it." She and I have had the dream to eventually start a church, but the timeline was unknown. After our "God-encountered" beach trip we now had our "Take the Land" charge to go and plant Steps Church.
We are, by faith, believing God will change Charleston, South Carolina and many will come to know Jesus. We don't have it all figured out but then again we believe that is the best place to be, because in that place we know it's not in our control but in God's control. "By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going." (Hebrews 11:8)
Let's take the step together in faith and take the land,
Dustin and Danielle Wise
